Shine Bright: The Ultimate Guide to Caring for Your Dog's Eyes

Writer's picture: Team Waggles ~ Suzi Team Waggles ~ Suzi

Just this weekend Jako had to take a trip to the vets as his allergies have really played havoc with his eyes. We suspect the very sudden onset of warmer weather and high pollen count have played a big part. He has two different eye drops 3 times a day and his eyes are very sore but he was so, so good with our lovely vet Steve when he had to examine his eyes and check for tear production. He is equally as good with us at home allowing us to administer the drops.

We put this down to doing our weekly "Let me see" session! Ever since pups all of our dogs have a weekly "Let me see" session where we check their ears, paws, eyes, mouth and all over body condition. It's a good routine to get into and only takes a minute or two. We call Jako and say "Let me see" , he comes and lies down where we gently check him over. Doing it from him being a pup has made it such a normal routine for him and with a gentle approach and of course a treat at the end it works wonders :)

Here's Jako after his trip to the vets on Saturday.

Why not give a weekly check session a go with your dog, you could even make it into a game! Let us know how you get on!

Here are some tips for caring for your dog's eyes...

  1. Regular Vet Checkups: Schedule routine veterinary checkups to monitor your dog's eye health and catch any issues early on.

  2. Cleanliness is Key: Keep your dog's eyes clean by gently wiping them with a damp cotton pad using cooled boiled water to remove any discharge or debris. Be sure to use a separate area pad for each eye to prevent the spread of infection.

  3. Proper Nutrition: Ensure your dog receives a balanced diet rich in essential vitamins and nutrients, including those beneficial for eye health, such as vitamin A.

  4. Protect from Irritants: Shield your dog's eyes from potential irritants like dust, pollen, and chemicals by avoiding exposure when possible.

  5. Avoid Trauma: Take precautions to prevent accidental trauma to your dog's eyes, such as keeping sharp objects out of reach and using caution when playing rough.

  6. Regular Grooming: If need be trim any excess fur around your dog's eyes to prevent it from irritating or obstructing their vision, if you are not confident, ask a qualified groomer to help.

  7. Watch for Warning Signs: Be vigilant for signs of eye problems such as redness, swelling, excessive tearing, squinting, or discharge, and consult your vet promptly if you notice any abnormalities or something you are concerned about.

  8. Preventative Care: Discuss with your vet about preventative measures such as eye drops or supplements to support your dog's eye health, especially if they are prone to certain conditions.

  9. Provide a Stress-Free Environment: Minimize stress for your dog, as stress can exacerbate eye issues. Create a calm and comfortable environment for them to thrive in.

Remember, while these tips can help maintain your dog's eye health, always consult with your vet for personalized advice and treatment options.
